What We Do
Adventure &
Education
Wollangarra is a not-for-profit outdoor education centre unlike any other. Nestled on a remote river flat in the stunning Macalister River Gorge, Victoria, we offer young people a rare opportunity to step away from modern distractions and into a world of hands-on learning, community, and adventure.
Founded in 1988 by Ian Stapleton, Wollangarra was built on the belief that young people thrive when given the chance to connect with the land and contribute meaningfully. There’s no road in—everyone arrives by flying fox over the Macalister River, marking the start of an experience that is simple, challenging, and deeply rewarding.
Built by Young People
For Young People
Wollangarra was built by young people, for young people. From the very beginning, teenagers and volunteers worked together to construct the homestead, using recycled materials and traditional building techniques. That same spirit continues today—each year, young people help maintain and improve Wollangarra, learning practical skills and taking ownership of the place in a way that’s rare in today’s world. It’s a place where young people aren’t just visitors; they’re part of something bigger, contributing to a community that values hard work, connection, and care for the environment.
Programs with
Purpose
For parents, Wollangarra offers an experience that builds confidence, independence, and a sense of responsibility in their children. For schools, it’s an opportunity to provide students with an immersive, hands-on learning experience focused on leadership, sustainability, and outdoor adventure. For young people themselves, it’s a place to step outside their comfort zone, learn practical skills, and discover what they’re truly capable of.
A Solid Track Record!
Wollangarra has been operating for more than 35 years. The structure and content of the programs we run are much the same as they always have been. It’s simple and it works!
